A child could understand this: without releasing all the hostages there would be no peace. Not after what Hamas has done.
And Hamas was counting on the said protesters to obscure this obvious truth. Mission accomplished.
It was all about bashing Israel, and the protesters, naively or cynically, ( it really doesn't matter which one is more true than the other), fell for it. Guess who suffered as a consequence (hint: not the protesters). The people of Gaza, unsophisticated as they are, understood this better than all the intellectuals bemoaning their fate put together. Now, thousands of them are out on the streets of Gaza demanding Hamas ouster (https://www.npr.org/2025/03/26/nx-s1-5340645/palestinians-protest-hamas-rule-in-gaza). And tens of thousands of Israelis are now out on the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem demanding Netanyahu's ouster. (https://www.npr.org/2025/03/25/nx-s1-5339490/israel-protests-netanyahu-hostages-gaza-war).
There is a very easy way to find out what the protesters' real motivation is: Will they come out in support of the Palestinians who want Hamas gone and the war to end? Will they come out in support of the Israelis who want Netanyahu gone and the war to end?
Surprise me and tell me that they will.
