Yes, people on this site, some of them anyway, reacted emotionally, and perhaps hyperbolically, to the news on Friday. You can expect this sort of thing to happen in the immediate aftermath of 20 small children and their teachers being gunned down by someone holding a weapon many of us wanted banned decades ago.
That some gun owners came on, during this emotional groundswell, and attempted to defend the NRA, equivocate about the responsibility of the gun lobby, and deflect the blame in various odd directions (including some rather nasty attacks on children with autism) only exacerbated the situation.
If you support taking the first step, which is restoring the ban on assault weapons (and strengthening it where it needs strengthening) then you have my support. If, though, you're one of the folks (and I've seen some on these threads) who are arguing we can't and shouldn't do ANYTHING to further restrict, regulate, or limit access to firearms, then I really can't get too very worked up about your hurt feelings.
Sorry to be so blunt about it, but there it is.
I just now signed a White House petition urging that an assault weapons ban be passed with all due speed. I invite you to please go to the WH website and do the same.
