14. Look at it from the Pope's perspective.

He was just chosen by his fellows to fulfill a heavy responsibility and, after Francis, to fill some mighty large shoes.

Immediately after being elected, the new Pope dons his vestments in a room near where the vote took place. That room is known in the Vatican as the "Room of Tears". They call it that because many newly elected Popes weep while preparing themselves to be the leader of the Catholic Church. Imagine standing in that room and putting on those vestments, knowing that you're now the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion people around the world, that your words and actions really matter to them.

I can only imagine the sense of weight and responsibility must seem crushing, quite apart from the religiosity of the moment for an ardent Catholic. Catholics believe, after all, that the papacy is an unbroken (more or less) line of authority stretching back to Peter, who walked with Jesus.

Small wonder, then, that a new Pope might need some time to prepare himself to face the world.

I'm curious to see if the new pope dons the fancier traditional garb for the announcement. Francis declined it, I think LauraInLA May 2025 #3
If he does, could be a subtle rebuke of Francis. Self Esteem May 2025 #4

Thank you for the description! I read his bio and think he seems like a good advocate, but I'm not a Catholic. LauraInLA May 2025 #18
