19. The Church of my youth was worried about

The poor, the worker, the hungry, and the sick. This corruption of Catholicism to these Traditional types is grotesque.

It is fueled largely by Catholic converts and therein lies the problem. Cradle Catholics believe “that by our works shall they know us” amd that salvation is earned.

Protestant teachings are “sola fidelis” and works have no place in it. Catholics LIVE their faith, Protestants talk about it.

Remember that the Church is conservative by nature and some things will NEVER happen. Women will never be ordained and no Pope has the authority to change that - for it is Sacred Tradition. The Church is never going to marry gay people. The Church is never going to be pro-choice.

However, I don’t split. I can see shades of grey. I do not believe in allowing the Perfect to be the enemy of the Good. 1.3 Billion Catholics focused on social and economic and environmental justice is good enough for me. It beats the hell out of the traditional Catholics lamenting the days of the High Altar and Later in Mass. Prevost will be conservative with compassion and if he focuses on social justice more so than the morality wars - it’s a win!

I'm curious to see if the new pope dons the fancier traditional garb for the announcement. Francis declined it, I think LauraInLA May 2025 #3
If he does, could be a subtle rebuke of Francis. Self Esteem May 2025 #4

Thank you for the description! I read his bio and think he seems like a good advocate, but I'm not a Catholic. LauraInLA May 2025 #18
