During the first Obama administration, I picked up a magazine about him at the grocery checkout lane. Some old white dude behind me in the line said something along the line of, "You're not gonna buy that magazine with him on the cover, are you?" I'm not at all confrontational (cowardly to a fault), but I shot him a steely look and said, "Don't start with me." He didn't say anything else.

The only comments I ever make to people I don't know are polite compliments about a cool hair style, interesting clothing or jewelry item, a cute baby, or the like. People get enough negative stuff in their lives, so I like to dispense unexpected compliments when the opportunities arise. Generally well received.
