2. You can verify your identity at the post office.

Go through part of the login.gov process online (without scanning your ID or taking a photo), then select verifying at the post office. You'll print out a barcode and take it there. Just did this with my partner. The postal clerk scanned the barcode, checked the ID, and we were done. The clerk did not scan the id or even type in the ID number, just verified it matched the person and the info on the screen. You then go back to your computer and finish up the registration process.

I've heard that it's better/easier to use login.gov than id.me, fwiw.

A verified login has been in the works for a long time. They started with smaller services before making it a requirement for the big kahuna of SSA.
