5. The narrator made a perhaps incorrect assumption.

She assumed that the white man who got up and left was simply ducking the situation. He might have been going to find a conductor or somebody in authority on the train to summon help. That's what I would have been doing. I might have called 911, too. I am sure I would have gotten up and left like he did, but it would have been to summon help, not out of cowardice. I'm a white man too, but I'm also 75 years old and not in the best health. Getting involved in a scuffle or outright fight could be extremely hazardous to my health, maybe even fatal. Summoning help would have been a far more effective course of action for me in terms of attempting to defuse that situation.
