He lives in a bubble of effusive praise, fealty, and worship but one little slight, one bit of bad news (results of his actions) causes him to punish the courier. You could easily make the case that the Colbert firing was kicking out the court jester.

He thinks (and wants people to think) he is king and mob boss when in reality he’s just a petulant child.
