1. Something just occurred to me.

And I don't think that I have heard it mentioned before.

I remember the old days when the South was Democratic, some very progressive but most right-wing. It was an uneasy alliance that fell apart quickly when President Johnson signed the civil rights legislation. There was a saying that a "New York Republican was like a Texas Democrat".
It occurs to me that being in the same party the actual liberal Democratic politicians, mostly from the North, were able to get concessions from the conservative Democratic politicians (soon to be Republicans) in the South.
Now the Republican party is dealing with these people, politicians and voters, who are authoritarians. And the Republicans are unable and mostly unwilling to control this cancer.
I'm not sure of the implications, other than a big thank you to the liberal Democratic politicians of old who kept the conservatives in line.
