Maybe they'll rise to the challenge and maybe they'll devolve into a bunch of little kingdoms fighting each other, each with its separate currency, laws, and bureaucracy.

They just can't seem to understand the original colonies abandoned that form of non government when some of the colonies were on the brink of war with each other. That's why we got the constitution.

The worst thing you can do to people like this is give them exactly what they've been squalling for since they lost the Civil War.
