...but Roosevelt wanted the Soviets help against Japan, three months until Hitler's surrender.

It was a negotiation, and the U.S. wasn't in so much of an adversarial position against the Soviets at the time, as there was that wary alliance.

They balanced interests, and hindsight lets us see the mistakes made, perhaps, among the enormous challenges the allies faced in that volatile period in history.

The Soviet entry into the war was a significant factor in the Japanese government's decision to surrender unconditionally, as it was made apparent that the Soviet Union was not willing to act as a third party in negotiating an end to hostilities on conditional term.

It was a pivotal moment in World War II's conclusion. The invasion of Japanese-occupied Manchuria by the Soviet Union, which began on August 9, 1945, was a surprise attack that effectively ended the Japanese resistance in the region.
