If Putin still thought he could push through and achieve total victory in Ukraine, he wouldn't even be considering peace talks. Now he is trying to bluff his way in this war, get territorial concessions from Ukraine, and a pause in hostilities so he can regroup and resupply. He knows that if he continues down this current road it ends up like the Afghan war, humiliation, defeat, and himself out of power. Ukraine needs to call his bluff and keep pressing the war home.
