were thankfully for the Civil Rights Act. But in South, Democrats -- more specifically, Dixiecrats -- were the ranting racists/bigots.

That doesn't mean GOPers weren't racists, they just didn't need to be vocal about it because of the likes of Lester Maddox, George Wallace, Ross Barnett, and thousands of vile Dixiecrats.
