they also now have the banking information for where your Direct Deposit goes. I would strongly recommend that you open an additional account at your institution and when each deposit comes in do an immediate transfer to that 2nd account so that there is no balance left around in the one that receives the Direct Deposit. It would do no good to have SS use a different account because the scammers would try to come back in to the SS system and try to get that account you changed to. By having the 2nd account and doing a transfer by phone or online, I recommend by landline phone, Social Security never has that 2nd account number.

I do this with my business account that receives ACH deposits and then I transfer them right away to a 2nd account. That way the people sending me money never have the info for the 2nd account. Years ago I had someone do fraud on me by having the business account number that takes ACH deposits. Probably a crooked person in the back office at one of the many companies I do business with and it's fairly easy because almost all of them want you to send them a void check when setting up the ACH process. Then they also have your signature and tax ID on file from your contract paperwork to be set up with their company. So they have the bank, the account number, routing number, SS # or Federal Tax ID# and name, address, signature and phone number. Most of these companies are now all asking for a copy of your Drivers License as well.
