(3,589 posts)Might vary a bit from state to state as to how long for the same crime, but Im pretty sure that regardless of federal or state, the only crime that SoL (no pun intended) doesnt apply to, is murder.
The alleged reason behind SoL is because evidence disappears, chain of evidence can be compromised, and the biggy? Memories. Why? Because we know they change over time. Memory is definitively, inherently fallible.
And thats ironic because we give eyewitness testimony the highest level of credibility, but it is the absolute least reliable form of evidence: every time you recall an event, your brain actually changes the memory a bit. Think of it like a digital file: lots of 0s and 1s making up that data. Your computer might, unintentionally, accidentally write a 1 where a 0 should have been. Now, that write error might not be fatal for the file, but add up enough transcription errors, and your data are shot.
