I learned this many years ago. There was a great journal called Z magazine. They long ago closed their doors. The closest thing to it today would be Dissent, which publishes (iirc) 3 times a year. Z was on cheap paper. Almost no advertisements. Thin.

On the other hand there was Bill Buckley’s National Review. Always filled with paying advertisers. Glossy cover, thicker printed pages. That’s where the money flowed.

Immoral capitalist don’t fund media that doesn’t spew the messages they want heard. Moral citizenry for the most part never heard of Z. It didn’t have a tall enough soapbox to be heard over the propaganda spouted by well funded media.

(These were the days when we had to stand on street corners handing out leaflets with our messages to be heard at all, sometimes harassed by low-info citizens and police. The latter, as poet DA Levy said, “the police protect the banks, and everything else is secondary”.)
