Slipping clutches transmitted more power to the track, but in the early stages of development they could explode and cut the car in half. This happened to jim nicoll when he narrowly lost to don prudhomme at the 1969 u.s. nationals right at the finish line. The front part of the car sped in front of prudhomme as he was decellerating with the aid of a parachute and the car , only from the engine forward, skidded in front of him. Prudhomme thought nicoll had died and nearly crying., said he was quitting. A few other drivers did die from clutch explosions, which also sent pieces into the grandstands injuring spectators.
