8. So, do they get dress uniforms now with shiny jackboots? Must be such a thrill terrorizing children...

…and kicking in the ribs of senior citizens — do they have to take drugs first to achieve the proper state of mind?

We used to wonder, we American post-war children, what happened to the German people? How could they have done what they did, how could the bystanders let it happen? There must have been something uniquely awful about them — and it would never happen here.

My late MIL used to say that, from the perspective of her family and others she knew growing up in Vienna, it was unbelievable that the Germans could change like this. They were leaders in Science, Medicine, Music, Literature, the Arts. (Sound familiar?)

Yet as the Anschluss approached, she was the one who organized passports, train tickets, and necessary papers to get her parents, her two married sisters, and their families, out of Austria and into Belgium. (I can’t remember where her brothers were at that point) Even so, few of the family survived the Nazi takeover of Belgium.

How? Why? Well, we are finding out now, aren’t we?
