They thought nothing could touch them, and the National Socialists would be eternally in their debt for their cruel intimidations. That ended with the Night of the Long Knives, when their brown shirts ran red. Their arrogant oafish brutality was out of date. It had outlived its usefulness to the National Socialist Party, and the more loyal and better organized Secret State Police (Geheime Staatspolizei, or “Gestapo” for short) became a far more efficient state weapon. They gave the Party (Nationalsozialisten, or Nazis for short) the breathing room it needed for its domestic and foreign mayhem. It is frightening how many condemned prisoners after the Nürnberg trials unapologetically said, prior to being hanged, that it was still worth it. We’ll hear the same reactions from Republicans when the Trump nightmare regime is over, and not even one of them will face the gallows, though some probably deserve it.
