If your doctor prescribed aspirin for inflammation or arthritis, the typical level of aspirin is between 10 to 30 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) of blood. Any concentration above 40 mg/dL can be toxic.

In adults, taking 10 to 30 grams of aspirin can be fatal. Children may be fatally poisoned by as little as 3 grams of aspirin.

The lowest fatal aspirin dose reported in a patient older than 6 years of age was 13,000 mg in a 24-year-old man who died in 1918. He took the aspirin to relieve flu-like symptoms and died within 2 days after “a large quantity of blood was passed by the bowel.” There was no laboratory confirmation of the presence of salicylate in his body (Citation78). The next lowest fatal dose was 32,500 mg in a 30‐year-old patient (Citation58).
