Mouthing silver helped babies survived, that's why babies used to be given silver rattles and silver spoons to suck on. Its also why silverwear used to be made from real silver. Silver disrupts bacteria cells permanently. Silver has been used to preserve food and water, it became popular in the Middle ages to protect against the plague. In the American west silver dollars were used in jugs of milk to prevent spoiling. Silver Nitrate drops are put in newborn babies eyes to prevent infection. The Silver Institute cites information from studies over decades at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons on the health benefits silver and they even say silver can heal wounds.
