(4,737 posts)That particular handgun has a thumb safety; it MUST ALWAYS BE ON. The safety lever is located so that when you draw it, your thumb will rest on the catch; AFTER you've cleared the holster, while the gun is coming up, you sweep your thumb down across the catch to arm the pistol. It's an extremely smooth, natural motion - in fact, disengaging it before the gun has cleared the holster and is not pointed at your knee is awkward and counter-intuitive. My guess is this moran figured not switching it on, and going finger-on-trigger before the draw was done, would somehow make his shooting faster.
It won't. I've carried a 1911 and with the appropriate practice, drawing the pistol WITH YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, sweeping the safety, and only THEN putting your finger on the trigger is very easy and natural to do while the pistol is coming up into firing position, well clear of your body parts. John Browning knew what the hell he was doing and trying to second-guess him is only gonna hurt.
