They are being officially told. Even though likely they know more.

Everybody is concerned for the kid.

Ironically I have been on both sides, as a paramedic I got a major media outlet to play nice in exchange for the international exclusive in a hostage situation. (Yup, speak English, so got to play PIO) As a reporter I know better than put more details than officially necessary when you got this kind of a situation.
