Pawn shops are about making money and lending money to people who are unable to borrow money by other means. 99.9% of pawn brokers would probably tell you the business model used by the Pawn Stars bunch is idiotic. You never allow the customer to know the true value of an item if you know and they don't. You never give a customer more than what they are asking. Hardcore Pawn is a realistic view of how pawn shops work. Pawn Stars is not.
