77. HA HA HA. You are so freaking wrong it is not funny....

Now there are NO Workers in the trades outside of unions. (at least in CA) Most, especially the shops that have a lot of work, are all independent contractors working by the piece so the contractors avoid all that shit. As a indy contractor you have to pay your helpers out of your take, not the original contractors.....(Most pay in cash) they avoid taxes, Workers Comp, etc...... they don't buy materials or gas or pay for mileage. Everyone is that way.

In fact< came upon a guy sanding a floor the other day. he was prepping it for a concrete stain and was creating a huge dust cloud. I said (because that is something I know well) I told him you better wear at least a mask and he told me his boss would not allow him to wear a mask. That it would make everyone freak out about the dust and he might get sued for it.
