(11,175 posts)Let's make every assumption favorable to Obama -- that he's brilliantly calling their bluff, that nothing will come of this because they won't accept any deal, but that anyone who studies the whole episode will conclude that the Republicans are a bunch of hypocrites bent only on obstruction.
So what?
Anyone who's going to trouble to study the facts knows that already. What millions of voters will hear in 2014 is that "the Democrats" (through the leader of their party) tried to cut Social Security but the Republicans protected it.
You say that, in light of McConnell's letter, no one could make that argument with a straight face, and no one with two functioning brain cells to rub together could fall for it? Go look at the polling results about how many people think Obama was born in Kenya, or how many credited Romney for bin Laden's death, or how many blamed the (nonexistent organization) ACORN for voter fraud that re-elected Obama.
Obama should have learned by now that he needs to be much more willing to get into a confrontation. Carney says this budget "is not the Presidents ideal approach"? Well, dammit, let him send up a budget that is his ideal approach, and see if the Republicans propose an amendment to cut Social Security.
