(9,688 posts)I was a fan of Rachel long before her run at nbcnews.com.
She was smart and edgy and that's why she got the high profile job. She clicked. She used the opportunity to introduce a lot of new and thoughtful guests.
Then President Obama won in 2008. From sharp criticism of gov't she went to kissing ass. I expected a honeymoon period, esp. from a leftist of her standing, but not this. From foreign policy and war reporting using multiple unofficial and unembedded sources she went to fulltime snoozing with one of the most deeply embedded "reporters" in history, Richard Engel. She continued criticizing republicans, but didn't seriously push the dems to produce the "hope" and "change" that was advertised and, obviously, required. She no longer uses her position to promote those who give voice to the deepest and most researched and investigated left-wing criticism of US and world politics.
Yes, I understand that Obama "evolved" re. LGBT issues over his term, and did some good. But that isn't the whole of politics. And really, what kind of "evolution" is it to finally recognize, in 2012 and not know already in 2008, that universal principles of human rights apply to the people of the LGBT community? Doesn't this, too, show that Obama requires to be PUSHED, and pushed HARD.
So now it comes to this, the top Dems promoting chained CPI, which is the thinnest edge of the extremely well honed wedge, and every progressive on the planet who's interested in US politics knew this was coming a year ago or more. The Reps already using this fact to slam Dems for not protecting their base, the common people - even while saying this might be a starting point for a debate about *real* cuts, so long as the rich continue to be protected. This too was predicted, not just by a few but by the entire progressive community.
The so called "debate", at this point, is simply absurd. Americans are destroying themselves, not recognizing that the 1% who're choreographing this absurdity aren't dependent on *any* country, they are that rich.
This whole damned deal shows that Obama can be manipulated, and that those who pull the strings are the Reps and not the Dems, and *that* shows that Dems in general (both top down and bottom up) have been asleep at the switch. In fact Obama *asked* Dems to have his back, said that he *needed* that. But it didn't happen. The Reps ran roughshod over the Dems, turning politics around, showing that even from a losing position electorally they could, quite literally, silence the Dems. They didn't even have to f'ing filibuster to *win* a filibuster. Think about it (e.g. Rand Paul tried to filibuster, but after 24 hrs he had to take a piss, he lost and something which the rest of the Reps wanted to go thru' *did* go thru'). Around year two of Obama's first term it was to the point where the Reps didn't even have to threaten to filibuster for the Dems to quail, to fail. I give the de facto total win to the Reps, and don't give a f'ing thing to the Dems. Romneycare? Sorry, that's a Rep win, in fact a Rep double win since the Reps can tear the Dems a new one for *owning it* because of Romneycare's inadequacy considering the actual problem at hand, which has been *proven* world over to require the state introduce a single payer, highly regulated system.
Sigh, I wish Rachel would get back her spunk.
