Good cop/bad cop [View all]

In law enforcement there is a concept known as good cop/bad cop. It is used to get suspects to talk about what they know. Generally two cops go into a room to interview a suspect. The good cop is calm, friendly, offers a cup of coffee or cigarette. The bad cop is angry, in your face, threatening, perhaps even roughing up the suspect a bit. These two cops alternate their questioning of the suspect, and in the end, battered, emotionally shattered, the suspect finally talks. Which cop gets what he wants? Why the good cop, of course.

That is how this entire country is being played by the rich and the elite, and the political parties are acting as their cops. The Republicans are, of course, the bad cops, violent nasty critters who rough us up and scream in our face. The Democrats are friendly, promising change, are kind and gentle. Yet in the end, it is the Democrats who are getting the deed done. NAFTA, welfare reform, striking down Glass Steagal, insuring never ending war in Afghanistan, increasing the surveillance state, shredding public education, and now slashing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

If a 'Pug had come out with this attack on the most vulnerable among us, there would be rioting in the streets. But since it was a Democrat, sure, there is some protest, but many others are accepting of it, because it is the good cop, the reasonable cop, the oh so sensible cop that is doing the slashing.

Meanwhile, the rich and elite laugh all the way to the bank as their political tools get done what they want them to get done. The rest of us, we just get played. Don't you think it is past time to put a stop to good cop/bad cop in this country?
