(452 posts)By what you say you're implying that everyone who is denied a gun for mental history reasons is someone with dangerous abnormalities. Most people with severe mental illness will never do what lanza or holmes or loughner did. We don't even know if lanza suffered from mental illness.
I have a friend who tried to kill himself at age 22 after he walked in on his girl fucking another guy in the apt they shared and he told her he was going to kill himself. She called police. police pulled him out of his car in his garage before the carbon monoxide could kick in, he refused to voluntarily enter a hospital psych ward. They involuntarily admitted him temporarily under general police authority then a judge gave a signed order allowing it. He was released two weeks later. He is now 32, married with two children and has a good career. He is barred under federal law from owning any firearm because he cannot pass a background check. He has tried but was denied. No, he did not go buy one at a gun show. He has a lot to lose. We can argue over someone like this should be forever prohibited from owning a firearm ( I would say no, but maybe you disagree), but one thing I can say for certain is that he is not a dangerous person with mental abnormalities. He is on no meds and has been fine for ten years. Many people who are barred from owning guns due to mental history are barred because of suicide attempts when they were young. He watches her show as well and he told me that it made him feel less than human. So I don't think you understand.
