(53,233 posts)The biggest atrocity no one discusses: the command post exercise in the Pentagon that morning. There is a very strict Department of Defense regulation that says you will not under any circumstance use the name of any real-world entity in an exercise scenario. At the National Training Center the bad guys were Krasnovians, in the Army Intelligence School the enemy country was Romanoff, placenames were fictional, and so on and so forth. The reason should be obvious to all: if the notional event in the exercise happened in real life, you didn't want people to think the real event was exercise traffic. The 9/11 CPX involved a terrorist attack in New York and the bad guys were named Al Qaeda. So...when the real-world bad shit started happening, the players thought they were hearing exercise traffic.
