(68,460 posts)I have known people who, after a stroke that left them in a coma or otherwise virtually nonresponsive ended up being fine. If the damage is not massive, the brain can often reroute functions.
In 2003, after a hip replacement operation, my brother went into a deep coma when several small fat globuli ended up in his thalamus following the operation. Since the thalamus is part of the reticular activating system, when it doesn't work, the person cannot become conscious. The doctors were quite sure he would never wake up again.
But he did a few weeks later, and after a few months of rehab, learning to be upright, to feed himself, to live on his own, etc., he was fine. He still is fine.
For a while, we thought he would never wake up again. Then we were afraid he would not be able to function on his own again. Now, you would never know that he once suffered a catastrophic stroke!
I will keep my fingers crossed for your dear friend!
