(20,450 posts)Passions run high and deep. Anger at Obama and Holder has some legitimacy. But when one steps back and considers what has happened on a larger scale, no other president has witnessed this level of hatred and vitrol. Again, let me reiterate that no one should agree with everything a politician does. And some of the concerns people have are legitimate. But again, look at the broader picture and there is this recurring pattern of hate rhetoric from BOTH ends of the spectrum that wasn't there when Bill Clinton deregulated the banking, mortgage and telecommunications industries. This level of hatred and vitrol wasn't there when Clinton implemented welfare reform and NAFTA. Even FDR didn't experience this degree of hatred. Even he had some friends in his own party. And he enjoyed huge majorities in both houses, not to mention some liberal/moderate Republicans. Same thing with LBJ. This president, however, has seen nothing but obstruction and vitrol directed his way since he announced his candidacy on the steps of the state house in Springfield, Illinois. Every since then, the hate continues unabated--from all sides of the political spectrum and from a recalcitrant corporate media that refuses to challenge the obstructionists (read: treason). And many--not all--on the far reaches of the political left seem to blame the president FIRST; I wish they put more energy into defeating Republicans at all levels of government as they do being angry at this president. And every single day, there's a new outrage. There's a new gripe or disconent regarding what the president has or has not done, even when the charge turns out to be unsubstantiated.
I desperately want to be wrong. I really do. But I also believe that the column Melissa Harris-Perry wrote two years ago has some merit. I do believe that Tim Wise was spot on in his assessments of the power structure and how this "newcomer" has been embroiled in it.
I blame Obama himself for being stupid, naieve, or both. He should have known that he could never put into action what he championed in theory. He was wrong about this nation moving forward and getting over its past ills. He was wrong to think that a political party, motivated by power, greed and hatred, would ever work with him, even when the proposals he put forth were agreeable to his detractors. Some of the blame is his and I point the finger squarely at him.
However, my point stands. And I hope its wrong, but seeing everything that I've seen, I haven't come across any evidence yet that proves otherwise.
