(33,982 posts)Reporting requirements when your gun is stolen is no burden at all. In fact, most police departments are QUITE good at returning such stolen property.
Storage requirements may hurt your access to your firearms when you are not there. That's it. There are quick access safes, and you can even let your safe stand open when you are home, allowing unfettered access to the loaded and ready to go firearms.
Pretending it would be a burden (for instance, interfering when you NEED a gun) seems pretty flimsy of an argument to me.
We also have other incentives, like tax-free gun safes, free gun locks, etc.
As for the 20 year thing, I would disagree with you there, if in the case the owner has taken reasonable measures to secure the firearms. I have a co-worker that actually got broken into, alarm cut, and they busted open his Liberty safe and took his guns. I think he did due diligence in preventing that, and no jeopardy should come to him for it. (He also reported the theft, and a week later, the weapons were recovered and returned to him)
Now, had he left them lying in the middle of his living room floor, well, that seems a tad negligent to me.
