"They" don't believe they are racist because they won;t allow themselves to ever really think about their actions/beliefs.

Public figures can suppress their true beliefs for a while, but eventually it catches up to them.

My friend summed it up for me.. He said when he was young (Alabama) he grew up KNOWING his place in society and he knew his "enemies" because of the way they treated him , his friends and his family, but after Civil Rights and many moves north and west, he grew accustomed to not knowing...suspecting always, but never really knowing until a situation became dangerous.

He also said that raising HIS kids was actually harder than the raising of him and his brothers & sisters...back when things were truly black & white. He & his wife have 2 sons & he said that when they were young (the boys) they had a multicultural group of friends, but it was paramount to teach them about the dangers of DWB and they THEY had extra things to learn than their friends did. (dealing with the law).

Being a black teenaged boy is very dangerous no matter where you live. He once said that having grandchildren was his most prized "accomplishment" because it proved that he & his wife succeeded in keeping their sons safe & alive long enough to grow up & become Dads. (One's a lawyer..the other a businessman)
