(29,082 posts)The traditional druidic curse was a satirical incantation, seen as potent magic. The ability to curse with words was greatly feared as mocking words had the power "to raise blisters on the face or even cause death through sheer humiliation." It was called the Glam Dicin and brought sickness, shame and death. I think the distinction between who wielded this power was lost through time. Druids were sorcerers.
Mostly bards were storytellers, singers, poets, musicians, particularly harpers, historians and clan genealogists.
I think the druids have more magical abilities thus the ability to curse or cause one to die of humiliation. I think we can agree that this is an interesting way to kill a person. And that it is a long standing Irish tradition to use words against one's foes.
I teach mythology and am always interested in knowing more about the Celtic/Gaelic traditions! Why do you think this tradition is primarily bardic?
