(18,558 posts)I tend to think of bards and skalds as the fourth Estate, and the Druids as the first. I wasn't aware of the curse you cite, and somehow I figured bards would be the ones to kill with sarcasm, whereas the druids have so many other ways to kill one. Although historically priests haven't been too shabby when it comes to verbal fencing, I'd have thought the tools would be a bit rustier than those of the bards, for whom words are a vocation. But I am only a casual wanderer in the field of ancient Celtic myth, so I probably just conflated a bit of stuff read over the years. I do seem to recall it being mentioned that bards and skalds were quite feared for their ability to destroy one through mockery, but perhaps that was meant to be applied to one's reputation and not to be taken literally.
