A teenager was minding his own business when Z, a child molester and violent thug, gunned him down. Did overt racism play a role? Maybe, maybe not, but racial profiling clearly played a role. Drugs or alcohol may have affected Z's behavior as well, but we'll never know, because the SPD decided that Trayvon was the only person who needed to be tested for drugs. The 911 audio captured how Z profiled Trayvon. Z's thought process while approaching Trayvon was "these fucking punks always get away!" Z was looking for a fight. Z was looking to stop the punk from getting away.

Racist or not, I think the greatest factor leading to the tragedy was Z's lifelong desire to be a cop. Everything in Z's background shows he was a control freak who wanted to force people to respect his authority and bend to his will. Had Z accomplished his goal of becoming a cop, he would have been able to kill a lot more people without anyone batting an eyelash. But he was too crazy to be a cop. That says a lot.
