(37,748 posts)I believe the regulation to any degree of any dangerous substance or object in the post-modern age is predicated on a social and cultural cost/benefit measurement (e.g., emissions vs. transportation of goods, services and people via the modern automobile-- there is an absolute disadvantage to it, along with an absolute advantage, hence we as a culture weigh the one against the other )
Many of those measurements are indeed in question due to the (by definition) subjective nature of the social contract, and many of those measurements are indeed being debated-- even n the here and now (and we often, in this case, confuse debate with consensus), but for the most part, simply allowing or denying a thing in and of itself is done by accident-- all others are inspected by, and then either accepted or rejected (often after a long period-- which frustrates those with a lack of patience to no end) by the culture in question.
I imagine many side of many debates overlook this bit of cultural anthropology 101, while still others simply refer to it as a Culture War...
