(3,891 posts)I now have the ability to get alerts from the Government. Those include Amber Alerts, and messages from the President in an emergency.

The idea is that since none of us are watching TV as much, or listening to the radio when we drive, that the cell phone is the only reliable method of getting the information out in a timely fashion.
Then there is the prioritization of the communications (telephone) networks. That is a normal wartime procedure. When you made a long distance call during World War II the operator would ask you if this call was really necessary, as though the war would be lost by you making a call to tell your Mother that your wife just had a baby, and she (your Mother) is now a proud grandmother.
The idea is that the Government phone calls are far more important than any others, and that they must go through quickly and unimpeded. So if they have to make you wait, then tough because you're just going to have to wait.
