(3,891 posts)I've yet to come across anyone with whom I can agree entirely on every subject. My faith is my own business, I'd describe it as pieces of a number of faiths, and sciences.
That aside, I'm not making excuse for them. I've got no idea what they are like personally, you are unarguably better acquainted with them than I am. I would not try to argue you out of considering the one is an asshole.
However, I've found that many people are for lack of a better term, chameleons. They go along with whomever they are speaking to at the moment. If they are talking to a RW loon, they find it easier to agree, and go along, and parrot the talking points, not like that's difficult, a three year old could do so. By doing so, they tell themselves that they are being neighborly, or avoiding the inevitable difficulties that will arise in attempting to further educate a moron.
The one you consider an a-hole. I know a couple people like that. I don't bother arguing with them. I learned long ago that it is impossible to pour sense into the mind of a fool. I'll smile and nod my agreement when they present the latest insane theory. The sad part is, that often they have a kernel of truth in those theories, but they are unable to find it in the fluff of nonsense. An example would probably clarify that. Take the normal nonsensical argument against tax increases. They don't understand the enormous disparity of wealth, and of earnings. They ignore the declining standard of living for a majority of us, and the diminishing middle class. But there is a kernel of truth. The truth is that often Government squander money foolishly, just as people will squander money. In Afghanistan, they just completed construction of a $34 million dollar headquarters complex, about twelve months before we are going to be pulling the last troop out. Nobody wanted it, but we pushed it through, and wasted the money on a building that we'll never use.
Now, we here know that for every example of asinine waste, we can find three examples of well spent money. Disaster relief, food for the poor, Alternative Energy research, Climate Change research, and I could go on, and on, and on. So could you in all probability.
For the one you kind of liked previously, strike up a conversation later. Don't mention this, find a subject and see what he thinks about something else. I suspect, with very little evidence other than the fact that you liked him previously to some extent, and I would trust your judgment to smell out a RW lunatic before now, that he is a chameleon, able to shift from right to left, and personally far more moderate, than you give him credit for at this moment.
A moderate I can live with, they normally go with the crowd, and the crowd tends to avoid lunatic RW nuts.
