I got a VERY conservative friend of mine to basically stop caring what "The Gays" did with themselves, because I argued with him until he came to understand that anything fitting the definition of an actual Christian God (Eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, and ALL-LOVING) would NOT GIVE A SHIT.

The trick is to have a comprehensive and systemic understanding of the connection points of the Functional Universe, Constitutional Government, and Human Behavior. Understanding their God and their Faith and their Politics BETTER than they do, and keep shoving that Enlightenment into their heads (sometimes, as gently as you can), and eventually enough will come around that we can change the world. Also, I've found that a good way to start is to tell them "I'm an anti-corporatist (see LIBERAL) Republican, ala Teddy Roosevelt.." and when they look at you funny and ask what that means, start hammering them their own party history (Lincoln, Roosevelt, the sane halves of Nixon and Bush I...), the rise of the Corporate State, the idea that COLLECTIVE government is merely INDIVIDUAL initiative FREELY GRANTED to the purpose of large-scale goals, etc...

I've become convinced that the key is not to FEEL liberalism, you have to THINK IT THROUGH. "Feeling" things about political positions is what THEY do, and it's why GOP voter base gets led around by the nose by the likes of Rush and Beck, and why that party is as fucked up as it is.
