33. "When did so many white parents fall asleep at the wheel?"

Exactly the right question... and I can tell you it was at the latest in the early 1990s. I recall some of the neighbors coddling their kids to unbelievable degrees (one kid would just sit down and cry when he couldn't tie his shoes - at 5!), and now all these years later, I have applicants for jobs (in their late 20s) having their *mothers* call in to tell me how wonderful their child is.

Discipline went out the window along with common sense, and sadly too many of these parents are themselves quite out of control. As an example, some 30s-ish guy tried to pass me on the shoulder so he could get to a corner (and pick up about 10 seconds in his trip), and when the light changed, he pulled up next to me, hollering how he was going to beat me (I'm a nearly 60 year old partially disabled white guy - one punch and he'd be in for murder, most likely), and that I was a "punk"!!!! These kids see this type of behavior and they assume it's correct, especially as they have been given everything their whole lives. Yes, they need jobs, but if they really want jobs? Let them start with the discipline of mowing lawns - they didn't do it at 14, maybe they should get out of Mommy's basement and start now!

Sorry for the rant and hopefully no offense to anyone.
