The "self-destructive trash like 'Anarchy in the UK'" was written and performed by the Sex Pistols, not the Ramones, in 1976, watched by the grandparents of this generation:

The song "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" was written by Dee Dee Ramone in 1975.

And let me say something else: I saw the 1970s. I have worked with people from that era my whole life. I have friends born in the 1960s who have never read a book in their lives, who still won't go on the Internet because they prefer the thoughtless safety of television--and because they are functionally illiterate. And those morons? They never even knew who the Sex Pistols were (like the author of this opinion piece), much less saw them.

Compare that to the most indolent hood of today--what is that kid doing? He's reading and writing--albeit in that annoying text-lish--all day long, preferring to go to great and inefficient lengths to communicate by writing rather than simply talk on the phone as their grandparents would have. He's listening to whatever he wants to listen to, rather than being force-fed payola-driven disco over a shitty FM radio. He's reading maps, which his grandparents are notoriously inept at doing (in the 1970s, the US Army concluded that one out of three officers could not be taught how to read a map). He is utilizing vast and powerful social networks and news sources to inform himself--totally different from the alcohol-fueled basement conversations that informed the Americans of the '70s.

I'll take these kids over the coke-addled Leave-it-to-Beaver couch potatoes of the 1970s any day at all. I strongly suspect this article was actually written by one of the latter.
