There is no effort to keep to the truth. Anything and everything can be asserted without basis, and people lap it up. Orwell had a lot of points in 1984 that were critically important, but I think none so much as the power the Inner Party through the Outer has to rewrite history almost on the fly.

What can you do when everything you know about history is a lie, and you have no way to check it?
