You have to remember that Gore was a Blue Dog that voted with the Republicans.

The excuse Clinton gave at the time seems funny today. Clinton claimed he was so liberal that he had to pick a ConservaDem to balance out the ticket.

The Democrats never got the message as to why Clinton/Gore won that campaign either.

As far as they were concerned, it was because of their brilliance of kicking the hippies out of their party since the country had swung to the right.

The reality is that they BARELY won in a plurality because the Republicans threw a convention in Texas where they went too far to the right for their own base. They were trying to attract the crazies by banning abortion while America wanted jobs after more than a decade of the failed trickle down experiment. (Not to mention the Iran Contra and CIA drug smuggling.)
