in that an attack on US soil had occurred. We declared war on Japan and when the German high command woke up the next morning, they declared war on us.

These "little" wars for corporate convenience are something else, altogether. They're draining an already starved treasury and the rich and corporate who benefit economically from them aren't contributing to them, at all. It's this sort of thing that has crushed every other empire in the history of the world. The only way for the US to come out of this is to end the wars and cede its empire.

And I don't see the wealthy allowing that for some time.

ETA: my paternal grandfather had read the writing on the wall and started to pull people out of Alsace in the early 30s. My dad was a civilian engineer assigned to the RAF in 1939. He didn't get drafted until 1944.
