In reply to the discussion: Slut shaming of Miley Cyrus is sexism and racism in action [View all]davidn3600
(6,342 posts)This genre is heavily criticized by many music-lovers (especially older folks but young as well) as being "cookie-cutter." In other words the claim is that the music industry can put any attractive person in these roles and turn them into a star. That most of their appeal is based on their sexual prowess and off-stage antics and not any real talent.
Miley's performance was too "in your face." It's not a poke at your shoulder to get your attention, it's a punch in the nose and looks a bit desperate. Miley needs to back it up otherwise the shock will get old quick.
She's trying very, very hard to shed the "Disney girl" label and appeal to a different audience. The issue is that she's trying to grow faster than her audience. Most of her fan base is still that Disney crowd. Do you see many adults walking around listening to Miley Cyrus? No. But kids still do. What she's trying to do right now is jump 10-20 years and grab a different generation. It's not going to work with this genre.
