I have been reluctant to comment on this story since I heard of it and watched the video.

I really could not agree more. Hoax or not, the reaction by people to this is what I found so completely disturbing, for all the reasons you wrote above. He filmed this-- he did this to manipulate people and that is in and of itself really awful.
