In reply to the discussion: Slut shaming of Miley Cyrus is sexism and racism in action [View all]freshwest
(53,661 posts)I have no way to form a correct opinion on this person. It appears the OP is speaking of other values rather than the performance itself.
The critical reviews of the quality, or lack of such in her performance do not seem to be on topic. Some Americans resent or mistrust any B&W collaboration, due to a prejudice known as miscogenation.
Those days are long gone for us at DU, but some benighted citizens are still hostile about such things. Perhaps OP has concerns about what OP sees as sexist and racist and is using this to draw some out.
Not you. I'm speaking generally and think the POV of the OP author is that criticism of Miley is not warranted. It's no use for me to judge what those who have grown up in a different era than myself find to be tasteful. I doubt if I'd enjoy her performance as it's described here, but it appears the OP found nothing objectionable. She has not returned to answer AFAIK, but I may have missed it.
I agree with the OP that men have been acting sexy in performances for years. Especially Jagger and Tyler. Tell me this video isn't gratuitous sexual imagery here:
It was outrageous. I still love it, but some might find it offensive today. Yes, it was definitely sexist in terms of the power aspects and the guys were acting their sexist roles out, but it looks like no one was unwilling. I laugh at it, each to his own.
IMO, the OP is right about men getting a pass. There may be both sexism, slut shaming and racism going on in the reaction to this woman's stage act.
It's hard to tell with half the populace playing at being Simon Cowell, who I think is a shallow, obnoxious jerk. But it's what media has turned many into, going after Obama for not having ketchup on his burgers, and all of that.
I think it's all shallow stuff, racism, sexism and all of the phobias.
Thanks for the chat, see you later.
Oh, and I would not have liked to have seen teddy bears used in a music show for adults with sexual themes. That's creepy. But I think Disney is creepy, too...
