"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" as a credo can lead down some dangerous and unsavory paths.

My mother illustrated this for me when I was very young by pointing out that Ireland, the country of our ancestors, hated England sufficiently to remain officially strictly neutral during WW II, while elements of the IRA actually collaborated with Nazi intelligence.

That piece of motherly history has certainly given me pause many a time. I hate to see it playing out in my own country and even, on occasion, here.
